Most tBG by a Team in a Game - Highlights

Texas Rangers vs. Baltimore Orioles, Aug. 22, 2007, Camden Yards: 133 tBG

The Texas Rangers thrashed the Orioles that day 30 to 3, generating the most tBG in a game by a team (going back to 1914). It was the first game of a doubleheader. The Rangers also won the second game 9 to 7. Long night for the Orioles.

Besides generating the most tBG in a game, the Rangers also did the following::

  • First team to score 30 runs in a game since 1897.
  • Scored more runs than outs (27)
  • Scored more runs than hits (29)
  • Hit two grand slams
  • 18 for 25 with RISP
  • 4 hitters with 4 or more RBI, an AL record.
  • 39 runs scored that day, an AL record for most run by a team in one day.

What makes the Rangers' performance even more incredible is that by late August, they were out of the playoff race and were playing out the string. They had already traded Kenny Lofton and Mark Teixeira at the deadline. The Rangers finished last in the AL West that year. The Orioles finished 4th in the AL East that year, a mere 27 games out.

Other highlights:

  • Daniel Cabrera started for Orioles and gave up 6 runs in 5 innings; 3 relievers gave up 24 runs in next 4 innings.
  • For Texas, Ramón Vázquez & Jarrod Saltalamacchia both had 2 homers and 7 RBI.
  • The Orioles were charged with just one error.
  • After 3 innings, the Orioles led 3-0.
  • Reliever Wes Littleton pitched last 3 innings for Texas and got the Save, perhaps the most undeserved Save in baseball history.

Also, Sammy Sosa was on the Rangers that season, his last in the majors. He had 21 HR and 92 RBI that year, although he did not play in that game.

Phils fans should note that our old friend Marlon Byrd started in CF for the Rangers in that game and went 2 for 5 with a HR and 4 RBIs.
