Who Had the Best Game as a Base Runner in MLB History?

Johnny Neun and Bert Campaneris are tied for 1st place in the Most Bases Generated as a Base Runner in a Game Report, both with an amazing 9 tBGR in a single game. This report identifies the players with the highest tBGR (total Bases Generated as a Base Runner) in a single game--going back to 1914.*

Campaneris accomplished this record against the White Sox at Comiskey on Aug. 16, 1966, and Neun in the 2nd game of a doubleheader against the Yankees at Navin Field in Detroit on July 9, 1927.

Neun was a backup 1st baseman on a Tigers team coached by Ty Cobb. In the 1st game, the Yankees won 19-7. Ruth went 5-6 with 2 HR and 7 RBI. But in the 2nd game, Neun wore out the Yanks on the base paths. He went 5-5 (all singles), had 5 stolen bases, moved up 4 bases on throwing errors (for a total of 9 tBGR), and and scored 5 runs. The Tigers won 14-4.

The doubleheader was the 3rd and 4th games in an unusal 6-game series in Detroit. Neun started the final two games of the series and had no steals and only one hit. The teams split the series, three wins each.

By the way, four days later, Neun stole home twice in a doubleheader against the Washington Senators, once in each game. And on May 31, 1927, Neun recorded the first unassisted triple play to end a game. After his playing career, Neun went on to coach and scout for MLB teams until his retirement. He was from Baltimore, and he died there in 1990.

Campaneris went 4-4 against the White Sox with 3 singles, a triple, and 2 SB. He scored all 4 runs in the A’s 4-2 win. Oddly, he was not driven in. The 160 lb shortstop from Cuba terrorized the White Sox, scoring on 2 throwing errors, a wild pitch, and a passed ball. Campaneris was a 6 time All Star, lead the AL in stolen bases 6 times, and was on 3 World Series winning As teams in the 70s. In 1965, he played all 9 position in a single game.

Amazingly, neither Nuen nor Campaneris was thrown out in either game. They both ran wild on the base paths.
